Butler Elementary Student Named May Superintendent's Student of the Month

Published on: 6/7/2023

Our student of the month for May 2023 is a fifth grader at Butler Elementary School.  She is BETA Club President, a class finalist for Spelling Bee, iReady Champion, Spring Madness Winner, and frequent “Caught Being Good" Winner, Jaylien Pacheco.

Jaylien's nominator, Mrs. Latila Slay, tells us that our scholar has shown drive and consistency in academic improvement. She has shown the most improvement in English Language Arts because English is her second language. She tested out of the ESOL program and improved her score from 86 to 100 in the first nine weeks of school.

Our student loves to read, draw and play basketball.  She's also a go-getter that welcomes challenges and obstacles.  Mrs. Slay said, “I see in this young lady, a determination that could rival that of any adult!  Welcoming obstacles is something that takes a certain level of maturity, and she is only 11 years old;  yet she relishes being a fun-loving kid."

When asked what motivates her, Jaylien said,  "I strive for academic excellence to reach my career goals. Being a fashion designer motivates me to be the best at everything I do. Making my parents proud also motivates me!"

Jaylien will be taking home multiple gifts courtesy of our community and business partners – a gift card from Members First Credit Union and The Horne Law Firm. Also, she will receive a meal voucher and merchandise from Chicken Salad Chick, as well as a dozen cupcakes from J's Sweet Treats. Jaylien and students in her English/Language Arts class will receive printed copies of her favorite book Hope Rising by Kim Meeder from our sponsor E. Shaver Booksellers. Lastly, Jaylien will take home a portrait by Upscale Photography provided by Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. Again, congratulations to Jaylien, her family, and her school!
