Five SCCPSS students will be participating in a highly coveted three-month mentorship program this spring based on their award-winning film work. Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah and the Georgia Film Academy at Savannah Technical College program will pair our students with a current Georgia Film Academy student to learn terms, etiquette, departments, and protocol of working on set or in a production office, as well as participate in classroom sessions and hands-on activities. The students who earned this opportunity are Daniel Dos Santos of Groves High School, Yan Luis Castillo of Johnson High School; Malik Wood and Ian Breen or Savannah Arts Academy; as well as Wyatt Oswald of Garrison School for the Arts. SCCPSS staff and teachers recommended these students based on their award-winning film work.
The Georgia Film Academy program at Savannah Technical College is the perfect pathway for students to develop careers in the film industry. Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah hosted the students for a special luncheon with visiting filmmakers during its annual film festival last week. SCCPSS Superintendent Dr. Ann Levett was in attendance, along with directors V. Scott Balcerek and Max Lowe, photographer Cira Crowell and the subject of the film, Mothered by Mountains, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita.

Georgia's $9.5 billion film industry, the third largest production center in the nation, is expected to generate over 5,000 new jobs over the next three to five years, most of
which will be on set or behind the scenes. In response to this growth, Georgia Film Academy (GFA), a unique, statewide initiative designed to prepare Georgia citizens for these high demand jobs, was created at Savannah Technical College. Earning this technical certificate of merit lets film professionals know that graduates have received the educational and hands-on training necessary for them to be successful in the industry. students gain experience with professional equipment and on-set procedures by working on a number of projects and production scenarios; students start working with equipment the very first week of class.
