Flag of Learning and Liberty Raised over Mercer Middle School

Published on: 10/15/2018

On Monday, October 15, 2018, district officials, board members, faculty, staff and students gathered at Mercer Middle School to raise the Flag of Learning and Liberty in honor of the 2019 SCCPSS Teacher of the Year, Kiwonda Riley.

The Flag of Learning and Liberty was inspired by the importance of education and significant reform movements undertaken by many states of USA. The Flag’s design incorporates the red, white and blue of the “Stars and Stripes”, symbolizing America’s historical belief in and reliance upon education.

As a representative of the many dedicated teachers across the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, the district’s Teacher of the Year is honored with the distinction of having the Flag of Learning and Liberty proudly displayed at his or her school for the year.

Ms. Kiwonda Riley is an academic coach at Mercer Middle School and was named the SCCPSS Teacher of the Year at the annual gala in February 2018.  The Flag of Learning and Liberty will fly over Mercer Middle School for the 2018-19 school year.
