One month
after a Savannah-Chatham County Public School student tied for top honors at
this year’s Annual Chatham County STAR Student and STAR Teacher recognition
luncheon. Islands High School Senior Caroline Adkins was named the
regional winner at the Region Ceremony in Statesboro on March 20th.
Adkins chose to honor Ms. Megan Heberle, her scientific research teacher as her
STAR Teacher. The STAR teacher is the one educator that the STAR
student feels has been the most influential/inspiring.
The Student Teacher Achievement
Recognition program seeks to showcase academic excellence among public and
private high school students. Each year across the state of Georgia, STAR
students and STAR teachers are honored by their schools and receive special
recognition in their communities from civic organizations and businesses that
serve as local sponsors of the STAR program. Those recognized receive the
opportunity to continue to regional and state level competition.
The factors considered in naming the
STAR student are class rank and SAT Scores. Adkins will now advance to
the State Level Competition in Atlanta which will be held at the end of
April. The State competition includes essays and an interview.
The Chatham County event is held each
year by the Kiwanis Club of Savannah. Corporate sponsors of the event
include, Kinder Morgan, Reese & Company, Bernard Williams, Hussey Gay Bell,
and Rody’s Audio Warehouse.
