Johnson High Students Excel at Collegiate Debate Conference

Published on: 11/13/2018

Last week, the Sol C. Johnson Model African Union attended the 22nd annual Southeastern Model African Union conference - a collegiate debate conference - where Johnson was the only high school in attendance.

Students debated important global issues from an African perspective such as youth unemployment, gender inequality, good governance, free trade, peace and security, as well as the fight against corruption. They practiced skills such as public speaking, resolution/proposal writing, conflict resolution and the art of compromise.

Johnson High students not only held their own with universities such as UGA, Ohio State and Kennesaw State, but came home with two awards! Carlos Ferrer won an Outstanding Leadership award and Malaycia Sanders won Honorable Mention!

The students also had the privilege of meeting the ambassador from the African Union to the United States, H. E. Dr. Arikina Chihombori-Quao! She is pictured with the group in the photo above.

The following students participated in the conference:

Pe’lae Massey

Alexandria Kern

Callum Bagley-Heath

Kendel Franklin
