Students from both Marshpoint Elementary and Garrison K8 are moving on to state level competition after finding success in the regional level of Georgia Tech's K12 Inventure Prize Competition. The competition has students compete with various projects centered on invention and innovation, focusing on solutions for a 21st-century world. The competition pushes students to tackle world issues in unique ways.
Marshpoint Elementary had three teams participate and swept first, second and third place at the Elementary level of the competition. Teachers Natalie Allred and Gail Jones supervised the teams of fifth graders as they worked through the design process.
Members of the first-place team included Katelyn Mundy, Lily Robertson, and Jessica Zheng, inventors of the Infant Informer. The Infant Informer is a device (necklace/bracelet/watch) invented to save babies and children from being left in hot cars.
The team winning second place included Madeline Balthrop, Lily Clark and Bennett Rawlings. They designed the EcoSpoon, an edible, eco-friendly spoon invented to replace disposable, plastic ware.
The team winning third place included Stanley Smart and Ava McKinney. They designed an adjustable storage container called Shape Shifting Storage.
At the middle school level, SCCPSS had the 2nd and 3rd place winners, both teams from Garrison School for the Arts. The second place team consisted of Declan Laufenberg, Carlos Berrios and Samuel Crisp. The team created The Tornado – a machine that allows individuals to be able to wash and dry their clothes without having to physically remove the clothing until the final drying cycle has ended. Clothing is automatically transferred to the dryer.
The third place middle school level winner from Garrison was Adam Goodwin. He invented The Glovinizer - a portable hand glove that will charge your device so that you can have a portable charger everywhere you go and never have to lose power in your cell phone ever again.
