Massie Heritage Center is the recipient of two Excellence in Exhibition awards from the Coastal Museums Association this year. The awards recognize exhibits completed in the 2020 calendar year. Excellence in Exhibition recognition is bestowed on exhibits that show excellence in interpretation, design, and implementation. Eligible exhibits include temporary, permanent, or traveling exhibits made available to the public during the calendar year or previous exhibits that have undergone major updates and changes in the calendar year.
The two Massie exhibits garnering honors for 2020 are “Go Down to Savannah: W.W. Law's Negro Heritage Trail Tour" and “American Indians of Coastal Georgia".
The W.W. Law exhibit focused on The Negro Heritage Trail, a unique part of Law's legacy that he developed in the 1970s. Born in 1923 in Savannah, Georgia, into an era of great inequality and social injustice, Law was a postman who would become an icon of civil rights as a historian, teacher, preservationist and an inspiring presence in the community. The exhibit showcased aspects of W.W. Law's collections in the Savannah Municipal Archives and included information about sites on the trail and primary evidence on how he developed, promoted and documented the success of Savannah's first guided black heritage tour from a black perspective.
The American Indians of Coastal Georgia exhibit takes visitors through thousands of years of history as they learn about American Indian migration into the Southeast, changes in technology, culture, and lifestyle along the way, and the effects of European settlement in our area during the Colonial Period.
