Published on: 4/6/2022

The Georgia Department of Education has awarded the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System grants totaling more than $334,000 to help cover costs for teachers enrolled in the District's Teach Savannah Learning Academy.   The grant is part of a total $6.8 million in Expanding Opportunities for Teachers Grants awarded by GaDOE to 19 school districts, Regional Education Service Agencies and higher education institutions across the state.

The GaDOE grant will provide scholarships for Elementary, Social Studies, Math, and Special Education candidates enrolled in the SCCPSS Teach Savannah Learning Academy. Further, the grant offers incentives for teachers who complete the endorsement(s) for Gifted and/or The Teaching of Reading through the Office of Professional Learning.  Shavondra Ceasar, Director of Professional Learning and Employee Development for SCCPSS says, “The Office of Professional Learning is excited about the opportunity to increase the capacity for training and provide additional resources to teachers and leaders in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System."

“It's our goal to elevate the teaching profession, strengthen the teacher pipeline, and ensure every Georgia student has access to excellent teachers," Superintendent Woods said. “These grants will support our teachers growing as professionals, from beginning teachers to teacher leaders – and their continued growth supports our students' ability to learn."

The grants are made possible through federal stimulus funds under the American Rescue Plan (ARP – ESSER).
