In order to recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 12-16, 2020. The theme, “Now Playing: School Lunch!", spotlights how today's school cafeterias are serving up healthy menu items that kids want to eat, with increased choice and customization during in person as well as virtual learning.
National School Lunch Week will emphasize the healthy foods that are offered daily at Savannah-Chatham County Schools. Throughout the week we will menu items such as Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo, Oven Fried Chicken with a host of fruits and vegetables on the side as well as blueberry crisp for dessert.
“School lunches are healthier than ever; the district provides more offerings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium," said Onetha Bonaparte, School Nutrition Director. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer" even during a pandemic.
We will offer Georgia Grown produce items such as fresh fruits and vegetables both during in person as well as virtual learning.
The federally funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program has been fueling students for success for more than 70 years, serving school meals that meet federal nutrition standards.
The “Now Playing School Lunch" campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association.
