The Home Depot Donates Construction Materials To SCCPSS

Published on: 3/31/2021

In February, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools announced a partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank to stock food pantries at 27 schools in the district.  These food pantries will provide a safety net for children who may be lacking basic nutrition at home or whose families are struggling to meet nutritional needs.  One of the requirements for a food pantry onsite was that the school needed a secure location to store the food items.  While some of the schools were prepared with prefabricated shelving, many were not.

“That's when we knew we had to get busy and figure out a way to provide these schools with the required shelving for these food pantries," said Clyde Newton, Economic Development Liaison for the district.  “When Home Depot heard about our need, they were able to provide the lumber and other components necessary to construct the shelves."  This project will provide a hands-on project for students in the construction pathway when they return in the fall.

“It is always a pleasure to support the community," said Mark Mills, Store Manager. “The Home Depot continues to strive to help with the community needs and support when needed."
