Two SCCPSS students were named winners in their divisions of the 13th Annual Leopold's Creative Writing Contest in 2023. The theme of this year's contest was “Courage". Leopold's sponsors the contest each year in collaboration with Live Oak Public Libraries. Creative writing develops writing skills, cognitive skills, and demonstrates to youth the power of persuasion that words can have. The winner in each division is awarded an ice cream party for their class!

9th Grader Reagan Holden of Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School, has been named the winner of the 9th-12th Grade Division. Her poem was titled “Hi".
"Hi."
Too scared to approach,
Yet too determined to let it go.
My mind swims with conflicting thoughts,
Two currents clashing together.
Yet I stand still,
Wondering if I'll ever get the courage.
Courage.
A fickle word.
It seems to mean being able to face anything,
Head-on, with absolute certainty.
Maybe just saying hi is courageous, but not for most.
"Hi" is a simple form of introduction,
Not one word, two letters, a thousand ways to mess it up.
Courage.
Maybe,
Just once,
I'll try to summon it
so I won't be so lonely.
8th Grader Brianna Jones of the Savannah-Chatham E-Learning Academy was named the winner of the 6th-8th Grade Division.
