SCCPSS School Counselor Confidentiality Statement

Published on: 8/18/2020

Savannah-Chatham County Public School Counselors will uphold the tenets of the ethical standards prescribed by the American School Counselor Association (adopted 1984; revised 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010, 2016). Our responsibility as School Counselors is to:

  • Inform students of the purposes, goals, techniques, and procedure through which they may receive counseling services in a developmentally appropriate way
  • Support the student's right to privacy and protect confidential information received from students, parent/guardian, and staff members
  • Explain the limits of confidentiality in developmentally appropriate terms
  • Inform students and family of the limits to confidentiality when the student poses a danger to self or others, court ordered disclosure is required, and in consultation with other professionals in support of the student
  • Protect the confidentiality of students' records and release personal data in accordance with federal and state laws, and school board policy
  • Convey a student's highly sensitive information through the most secure means available (i.e. phone call)
  • Advocate for acceptable encryption standards to be utilized for stored data and communicate in electronic means that follow currently accepted security standards while also meeting federal, state, and local laws, as well as board policy

Even during a virtual learning experience, SCCPSS School Counselors recognize and will continue to follow all legal and ethical guidelines for confidentiality. However, students and parents should be aware that virtual counseling sessions may pose potential limitations based on the electronic communication platforms available to both the student and counselor. To minimize these limitations, SCCPSS School Counselors will continue to utilize district approved technology resources such as Teams and Office 365 applications to provide services for students.
